According to the North Carolina Department of Administration, “human trafficking is one of the fastest-growing crimes in the United States”, with an active presence in the Triangle area. In response, local aesthetic entrepreneurs, providers, and leaders are joining together to host a gala event on March 12, 2020, from 6:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. at Raleigh’s Union Station with two specific goals: increasing visibility for the cause and raising money for local non-profit organizations currently fighting against the impact of human trafficking crimes in North Carolina.
“Awareness Through Aesthetics”, created by business owner Jennie Kowaleski, PA-C, began this effort by asking local aesthetic practices to join forces for the event, which will serve as a platform for and generate needed financial support for two non-profits that work daily to fight human trafficking: Designed For Joy and Shield NC. The “Yes” responses began rolling in late in 2019 and ticket sales for the Awareness Through Aesthetics gala began on Friday, January 10, 2020. Tickets are available for purchase online at AwarenessThroughAesthetics.com/shop/.
Aesthetic offices that have already joined together as hosts and sponsors for the March 12 event include Azura Skin Care Center, Blue Water Spa, BodyLase, Care Plastic Surgery, Jennifer Injectables, Lorena Luca, New Life Aesthetics, Synergy, and Wake Plastic Surgery. In-kind sponsors Raleighwood Media Group and Beam Collective have joined the firms’ efforts by providing digital and social media services for the event. For aesthetic practices wishing to join the effort, sponsorship information and registration are available online at AwarenessThroughAesthetics.com/product/2020-sponsorship/. Non-aesthetic businesses may also become a sponsor by contacting Awareness Through Aesthetics. In-kind monetary donations and silent auction items are being accepted if individuals would like to donate and are unable to make it to the event.

About Shield NC
Founded by Nicole Bernard, Shield NC works to identify the territories within a municipality in which a trafficking victim or an at-risk person is most likely to present and equip those territories by empowering them with the resources to identify and respond appropriately to a victim, prevent the occurrence of exploitation, or eliminate demand. The non-profit organization also assists establishments, such as schools, hospitals, and hotels, to create protocols for response, as well as enact municipal, state, and federal legislation that decriminalizes the victim and creates harsher penalties for the perpetrators. Finally, Shield NC provides restoration services in supporting existing service providers by filling gaps in needs. Learn more at ShieldNC.org.
